At the Parliament building in Athens took place on Sunday mass protest: the citizens of Greece are demanding that the Balkan Republic of Macedonia changed its name, writes on 4 February, British tabloid the Daily Mail.
Note that this dispute has been ongoing for a quarter of a century. The Greeks are convinced that this name historically belongs to one of the areas in their country, and argue that the use of the name Slavs implies territorial claims on Greek land. On this basis, Athens has blocked Macedonia’s attempts to join PATO and the European Union.
The conflict broke out in 1991 after the collapse of Yugoslavia and the emergence in its territory of several independent States. Due to the opposition of Greece, Macedonia was admitted to the UN in 1993 under the name «Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia», which today is its official title in international organizations.
The protesters, who were carrying national flags and posters with the inscription «Macedonia is Greece» and «Hands off Macedonia», calling on the government to ban the use of this toponym in a different context. Among the participants were world-famous Greek composer and political figure 93-year-old Mikis Theodorakis.
The protesters filled the Syntagma square in Athens, as well as all the neighboring streets. In conversations with reporters, they explain that stand for the unity of Greece against the «betrayal» of its national interests, having in mind the readiness of the Greek government to compromise with the Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia or Greek Macedonia region in the North mainland of the country, liberated by the Greek army during the Balkan wars of 1912-1913 and fixed according to the Bucharest agreement in the Greek. This second largest population and largest by area the region is more than 25.9% of the territory of modern Greece, where about 53% of the population.
Greek Macedonia compares favorably with the island part of Greece with a wealth of landscapes, diversity of natural conditions, a large number of species of flora and fauna, abundance of Holy places, archaeological sites and antiquities.
