Wednesday, April 6, a special Commission under the security Service of prisons has rejected the petition of former Israeli President Moshe Katsav on parole.
The Commission motivated its decision by the absence of repentance by the former President of the country and denial of guilt. «Katsav claims to be the victim, continues to behave very aggressive and completely gobsmacked by what price he paid for what happened, – is spoken in the decision of the Commission. – An inmate accused in his position of all but himself, and does not Express any sympathy towards the victims».
Before us is a prisoner who continues to deny the fact of Commission of crime, and occupied solely by the attempt to prove his innocence, as if there weren’t legal procedures, culminating in the unambiguous sentence», – is spoken in the decision of the Commission.
We will remind that last week the office for the rehabilitation of prisoners told the Commission about its willingness to introduce a therapeutic program in the case of early release Katsav. However, in the opinion of the Commission, it is not enough for parole.
Note that the verdict was announced after almost a two-hour Commission meeting, which initially was supposed to last only a few minutes. According to radio station «Sieves Beth», Katsav’s lawyers present at the meeting, tried to change the verdict, but attempts were unsuccessful. Prosecutors did not attend the meeting due to the ongoing strike of sanctions.
The lawyer of ex-President Zion Amir said that the defense intends to appeal. If it is rejected, Moshe Katsav intends to appeal to President Rivlin with a request for clemency.
Moshe Katsav was sentenced to seven years in prison for two episodes of rape and for indecent assault and sexual harassment. Before the expiration of a term of imprisonment of the former President remained 28 months. According to the poll, published in mid-March, 65% of Israelis oppose early release Katsav.
