U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson, speaking at Stanford University (California), identified five goals that Washington pursues in Syria.
According to the head of the American foreign Ministry, these goals are: complete defeat of the terrorist group «Islamic state», resolution of the conflict in the framework of the Geneva process under the auspices of the UN, reducing the influence of Iran, the achievement of conditions for the voluntary return of refugees and the liberation of the country from weapons of mass destruction.
«The trump is implementing a new strategy to achieve these goals. It lies largely in expanding diplomatic action in connection with the continuing military successes. Our diplomatic efforts will be characterized by initiatives to stabilize and a new focus on political settlement of the Syrian conflict,» Tillerson was quoted by the Interfax Agency.
As noted by the Secretary of state, the United States will maintain a military presence in Syria, to prevent the return of ISIS.
«For the national interests of the United States, it is important to maintain a military and diplomatic presence in Syria to help end the conflict in the country,» – said Tillerson.
