Rima Khalaf, the head of the UN regional commissions on economic and social issues of West Asia (ESCWA), Deputy UN Secretary General, resigned two days later after he accused Israel of apartheid. The reason for the resignation it is called the pressure exerted on it by the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres, reports Today Online.
A few hours earlier, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, appealed to the UN regional commissions on economic and social issues of West Asia (ESCWA), representing 18 Arab countries, urging them to remove from its website a report containing accusation of Israeli apartheid.
Recall the report in which Israel is charged with the establishment of the regime of apartheid and discriminatory policies against Palestinians, was made public on Wednesday, March 15. Such an open accusation at the Jewish state for the first time voiced from the rostrum of the UN. Rima Khalaf, the head of the UN regional commissions on economic and social issues of West Asia, said, speaking at the Beirut headquarters of ESCWA that «Israel is a racist state where Palestinians are persecuted».
Khalaf told the audience that Israel is pursuing a deliberate policy of the division of Palestinian society into four groups – residents of East Jerusalem, residents of the West Bank, residents of the Gaza strip and the inhabitants of the refugee camps outside of the Jewish state. This strategy allegedly used by Israel «to more successful suppression of the Palestinian people».
Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, has also criticized the report, saying: «the Attempt to denigrate and defame the only true democracy in the middle East by conducting improper Parallels disgusting and based on blatant lies.»
