Russian representatives began negotiations with the last major opposition groups remaining in the East Huta – «Jaish al-Islam». The agreement on the withdrawal of its militants give Syrian authorities complete control over the enclave, which in 2013 was in the hands of the opposition.
As informs television channel «al Jazeera», the first attempt to reach agreement failed after the rebels refused to evacuate in Idlib province in an area controlled by hostile groups.
As an alternative, the Russian offered them the opposition-controlled territory on the border of Syria and Lebanon. If this proposal is accepted, all the surroundings of Damascus, for the first time in five years, will be under the control of the Syrian regime.
Previously, the agreement on the evacuation of the Eastern ghouta left militants, two major groups of «Ahrar al-sham» and «Faylaq al-Rahman». They said that they would continue to resist, but decided not to cause suffering to the civilian population.
