Sunday, December 13, the crew of Russian patrol ship «sharp-witted» opened fire from small arms to the Turkish Seiners in the Aegean sea, about 22 km from the Greek island of Lemnos.
The Russian authorities claim that this was done to avoid the collision with the boat, and that it was fired from a «distance guaranteed neoregelia».
The Russian side claims that the Turkish crew of the seiner did not respond to radio contact with Russian sailors and did not respond to the special visual signals of the luminous semaphore and signal rockets, RIA Novosti reported.
Deputy defense Minister Anatoly Antonov summoned the military attaché at the Embassy of Turkey in Russia in the Ministry of defense in connection with an incident in the Aegean sea.
The BBC reports that the crew of «Clever» used small arms, when the Turkish vessel came to the Russian ship for 600 meters, after which, according to the statement of the Russian side, it changed its policy.
Chief editor of «Maritime Bulletin», a renowned expert on issues of navigation, Mikhail Voytenko says in connection with the incident that the Russian sailors «were entitled to bring to the attention of the next dangerous heading using all available means, taking into account the fact that a Clever lay at anchor, we were not able to avoid collision by its manoeuvre». At the same time, he noted: «Convergence to 600 meters, taking into account the fact that the vessel was fishing, that is small and maneuverable, were not dangerous».
