Saudi Arabia intends to take another step towards the empowerment of women. The Ministry of internal Affairs is preparing a reform, according to which widows and divorced women officially recognized «heads of household».
This will allow them to communicate with many government authorities directly, without the involvement of a male guardian. This is especially important for divorced – in accordance with the applicable laws, ex-husbands are still considered their guardians.
After the decision enters into force, the women covered by it, will be able to conduct business with the Ministry of internal Affairs, the educational system, medical institutions.
The main goal of the reform is to reduce the burden on the courts. 65% of the cases dismantle them – attempts of divorced women to challenge in court the decisions ex-husbands concerning them and their children.
According to civil activists, women’s reform even more important than the privilege to drive the car. Recall that the Kingdom is the only country in the world where women are forbidden to drive.
