Australian scientists analyzed the DNA of four families in which mothers had several miscarriages or children born with multiple congenital defects – problems with the kidneys, spine, heart, cleft lip.
The researchers found that the mutation of two genes leads to a sharp lack essential molecules known as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), which allows the cells to generate energy, and bodies to develop normally, reports the BBC.
It turned out that vitamin B3 is taken by a pregnant woman, increases the level of NAD, thereby preventing the occurrence of miscarriage and birth defects.
However, experts in genetics and Perinatology note that the study by scientists from Sydney was conducted on mice, and after just four families, and may not provide a sufficient basis for conclusions.
In addition, the commentators quoted by the BBC emphasize that the dose of vitamin B3 is recommended by the authors of the study, 10 times the usually recommended dose supplements of this vitamin. According to experts, the side effects of such high doses of vitamin has not yet been studied.
