Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz has ordered in 2016, reduce by 15% the proportion of electricity generated by Israel electric company («Israel Power») by burning coal.
Instead, «Israel Power» will have to increase the consumption of more expensive, but more environmentally friendly natural gas. It is expected that this step will lead to increase in the price of electricity by 1.5%.
The order will be valid until until coal-fired power stations will not be installed new air purification system and traps harmful particles emitted into the atmosphere from coal combustion.
The decree will enter into force on 1 January 2016. However, in order not to put the power system in excessive dependence on supplies of natural gas, all coal-fired turbines will continue to operate at a minimum capacity.
