Scientists from the society for the protection of marine turtles in Northern Cyprus are sounding the alarm. They carried out autopsies of dead turtles and found in their digestive organs bits of plastic. This phenomenon is particularly prevalent among green sea turtles. Plastic was discovered in 90% of the bodies of these animals.
The study was conducted off the coast of the Karpaz Peninsula, home to the green turtle. The labels on the packaging of plastic, scientists have found that this rubbish came from Turkey, Lebanon and North Africa.
