Thursday, 22 March, Syrian authorities have sent to the UN security Council an official complaint in which he accused Israel and Turkey in the theft of ancient artifacts from the synagogue in Jobar the Syrian (Eastern outskirts of Damascus), reports The Jerusalem Post.
According to the text of the complaint, the artifacts were stolen in 2000. Syrian Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jafari said that the Turks and the Israelis then «cooperated with terrorist groups» to steal and take valuable goods. According to Damascus, the abducted were taken to Istanbul, where they were peer-reviewed, and then forwarded to new York.
The representative of Israel to the UN Danny Danon in this regard, said that the Syrian regime is once again trying to divert the world attention from the real problems associated with the civil war in that country and death of civilians as a result of the actions of the army of Bashar al-Assad.
It is noteworthy that Syria is accusing Israel of stolen goods, still did not react to the confirmation of Israel’s destruction of al-Kibar nuclear reactor in September 2007.
Note that in 2013, repeatedly, there were reports of looting and desecration of ancient Syrian synagogue Eliyahu and-Navi, in the area Dzhobar. The opposition and government forces have blamed it on each other. In may 2014 it became known that the synagogue Eliyahu and Navi was completely destroyed in the shelling by Assad’s forces. This synagogue mentioned in the Talmud, according to legend, was founded by the Elijah-prophet and for many centuries was the center of the Jewish community of Damascus. Along with the synagogue, which consisted of about two thousand years, was destroyed many objects of Jewish worship. At the same time it was noted that the fate of the most valuable artifacts are unknown – after the start of the fighting, many of them were hidden leaders of the Jewish community.
