Tens of thousands of Japanese protest against U.S. military base in Okinawa

About 28 thousand Japanese citizens surrounded the building of the Japanese Parliament in Tokyo, protesting against the relocation of U.S. military base in Okinawa, demanding the closure of the base, according to Reuters.

Thousands of protesters held hands and chanted: «do Not build base». Similar, but less mass demonstrations were held in other cities of Japan.

It is an agreement between the American and Japanese authorities about the transfer of the U.S. Navy base from a densely populated part of the island to a new location at Henoko. The agreement on the transfer of the base was signed in 1996, but implementation was repeatedly postponed.

Residents of Okinawa, which became in the last months of world war II base bloody battles for many years protested against the deployment on the island of American troops and military bases, which occupy 18% of the island.

In 2009 the court of Okinawa Prefecture ordered the government to compensate residents for the damage caused to their health by aircraft noise the U.S. air force, which he estimated at 5.6 billion yen (57,7 million US dollars). This compensation was divided between 5.540 residents of areas near U.S. military base Cadena.
