The Secretary-General of the Palestine liberation Organization Saeb Erekat issued a statement on the 35th anniversary of the events in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in West Beirut. In September 1982, the Christian Phalangists in revenge for the murder of their leader Bashir Gemayel, massacred in the camps.
«The memory of the Sabra and Shatila will forever remain in the memory of every Palestinian. 35 years ago in the vicinity of the camps settled the smell of death. The streets were covered with the blood of thousands of innocent victims – women, children. The organizer of the heinous crimes was the Israeli General Ariel Sharon. He made possible the slaughter. A criminal could escape punishment,» said Erekat.
«Sabra and Shatila reminded of the fate of the 400 Palestinian villages destroyed by Jewish insurgents, the Exodus from the land, which remains our roots. They remind about the lack of justice. Award Sharon was not the dock of an international Tribunal, and the chair of the Prime Minister,» said the Palestinian leader.
Member of the PLO Executive Committee Hanan Ashrawi has also been blamed for the massacre on Israel. «It became a symbol of Israeli cruelty. Crimes against Palestinians go unpunished, and the aspirations of six million Palestinians unanswered. Israel and the United States should make every effort to implement the UN resolutions», she said.
The number of victims of the massacre of 16-18 September 1982 was, according to various estimates, 700-1.700 people, but the Palestinians argue that those killed were more than three thousand. Two weeks after the events in Israel created a Commission of inquiry, headed by Supreme court President Yitzhak Kahan.
According to her report, directly responsible for the murder of Palestinians carry Lebanese Phalangists. However, several representatives of the Israeli establishment are indirect sole responsibility. Among them – Minister of defense Ariel Sharon and chief of staff Rafael Eitan. They had to resign.
