The police of Egypt arrested in Alexandria six members of a terrorist cell that planned to commit a terrorist attack in one of the Coptic churches of this city. It was intended to coincide with the holiday Eid al-Fitr.
One of those arrested was to put in action the explosive device inside the Church, the second was intended to explode when the police arrive. According to investigators, the attack was to recover the Copts against the government.
«We for a long time were monitoring the group, using the most modern means. The arrest was made in the apartment, located in the district of al-Awaid, where members of the group were preparing terrorist attacks,» — said in a statement.
Arrested, two of whom are brothers, are cooperating with the investigation. According to them, they received funding from the Libyan branch of the Islamic state.
Copts make up about 10% of the population of Egypt. The jihadists have declared the Egyptian Christians a relentless war. Despite considerable effort, the authorities cannot ensure the safety of the community.
