The couple from Arkansas, 19-year-old Eric Shriek and 18-year-old Charles Elliott, was found guilty of negligent parenting, with the result that their child was in grave danger, according to Arkansas Online.
The incident, considered by the court, occurred last summer when the couple, along with daughter, which at the time was not yet a month, was visiting a friend in the old house. One night a girl was attacked by rats, biting her about a hundred times. In the morning the child weighed less than two pounds, was covered in blood, and the wounds were so deep that some of them had to have stitches surgeons.
The parents were accused of having left the baby in a dangerous place at night and did not respond to his crying, which led to serious consequences.
The couple was sentenced to five years in prison, however, they are eligible for parole after 304 days in jail. They are deprived of parental rights, and their daughter has already been transferred to a foster family.
