As radio station «Galey TSAHAL», Dean of the faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has ordered to cancel the singing of the national anthem «a-Gan» at the ceremony of awarding diplomas.
According to the report, the reason for the refusal of the anthem was the unwillingness to offend the feelings of Arab students.
The announcement caused a sharp reaction in the political sphere.
The Minister of education and Chairman of higher education Council, Naftali Bennett contacted the University President Menachem Ben-Sasson and said that the sound «a-Tikva» at all official events is mandatory. He also added that in informal activities, the rejection of the national anthem can not be done out of fear to offend someone’s feelings, because the national anthem is a symbol and not offend anyone.
Condemnation was also made by defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Deputy Ayelet Nahmias-Verbin («Zionist camp»), member Tzipi Livni («Zionist camp»).
