Data report released on Monday by the International organization for migration (IOM), indicate that over a million migrants from countries in the Middle East and North Africa profit in the past year on the European continent.
This paper contains an exact 1.005.504 person – which is four times greater than the same period last year. The report says that almost all of them chose the sea route.
3.692 men drowned, when they reached the shores of Europe: 2.889 of them sailed from North Africa to Italy, 706 died in the Aegean sea on the way to Greece and 72 tried to reach the Spanish coast.
The record for the number of arriving migrants are Greece, hosting more than 820.000 people, as well as Italy, Bulgaria, Italy, Malta and Cyprus. The representative of IOM Joelle Milman stresses that it is only those who have registered. Considering the limited capacity of the authorities, the real number of refugees in Europe considerably exceeds the mentioned figure.
A small number of migrants choose a path through Russia to Norway, most of these people come on bicycles. About half of all migrants are refugees from Syria, 20% are Afghans and 7% are residents of Iraq.
