Wednesday, September 27, Iraqi authorities announced the termination of flights from the international airports of the cities of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan after a referendum on independence for the Autonomous region. It is reported RIA Novosti with reference to the civil aviation authority of Iraq.
According to an official statement its flights to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah and departures from airports in these cities will be discontinued from the evening of 29 September «until further notice».
We will remind that in the evening of 26 September, the government of Iraq issued an ultimatum to the authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan and demanded until Friday to transfer control of all airports, to avoid international air embargo. The ultimatum did not concern domestic flights.
Shortly before the referendum on independence for the Iraqi Kurdistan government of Iraq has asked other countries to stop flights to Kurdistan, but that request was responded only Iran.
A referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence was held on Monday, 25 September, despite the pressure of world powers and threat to the neighbors. As expected, the majority of Kurds voted for independence in the region.
