Monday, February 6, the Knesset approved second and third reading of a bill to legalize outposts. 60 members of the Knesset voted for the bill, 52 deputies voted against. One of the people who voted against was a member of the Knesset benny begin (Likud).
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was absent because I just got back from London, where he was on an official visit.
Under the approved bill, the government will not destroy the Jewish settlements, which by mistake was created on lands belonging to the Palestinian Arabs. The law applies only to settlements created on the initiative of the state and not by private initiative of settlers. We are talking only about the existing settlements, and does not apply to the future.
The vote took place in the absence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
which flew from London later than planned because of the protracted meeting with the Minister of foreign Affairs of great Britain Boris Johnson.
While in London, the Prime Minister said he was not asked to postpone the vote on the law. «I was just saying that they are acting in accordance with the national interest of Israel, as I understand it,» — said the head of government.
The head of the parliamentary opposition Isaac Herzog has called on deputies from
the coalition factions to vote for the bill. «You can’t afford for an unconstitutional law that threatens the security of IDF soldiers and the international status of the state of Israel.»
The opposition withdrew all amendments filed. «We don’t mind if the vote will take place immediately,» — said the head of the «Zionist camp» meirav Michaeli.
It is expected that in the near future the high court will be filed the claim with the requirement to blame the law unconstitutional.
