The Knesset Committee on internal Affairs approved the first reading of the bill David Amsalem (Likud) and Ahmad sa’di (United Arab list), providing for the payment of members of municipal councils.
Currently, the members of the municipal and local councils working on a voluntary basis without receiving any payment. According to the initiators of the bill, this greatly harms the work of municipalities, as members of municipal councils are often forced to miss meetings, to keep out most of the work. In addition, it makes it impossible to run for municipal Council representatives of socially weak segments of the population.
The bill proposes a payment of 1,000 shekels for each member of the municipal Council for participation in each meeting of the Council or of the Commission.
Chairman of the centre for local authorities Haim Bibas already stated that if this bill is approved, the Ministry of Finance will have to pay it in full. According to Bibas, municipalities will not spend a single shekel, and if necessary, organize a General strike of the education system, according to The Marker.
