The mayor of Ashdod, Yechiel Lasri said that he’s not coming to the award ceremony of the Israeli Academy «Ofir», which this year will take place in the city, which he heads.
In a letter addressed to the head of the Academy, Lasry recalled that the Minister of culture Miri Regev turned to him with a request to hold this year’s ceremony. The mayor said that «boycott» declared by the Academy to the Minister of culture, contrary to the nature of Ashdod.
Earlier, the Israeli film and television Academy decided not to invite to the annual awards ceremony «Ophir» (the Israeli version of the award «Oscar») of the Minister of culture and sports, Miri Regev, to avoid the repetition of scandals in recent years.
Miri Regev, in turn, called the Academy decision «cowardly» and «undemocratic». She noted that «intellectuals are afraid that the public will hear her opinion about bad movies, criticizing the IDF», and that paintings such as «Foxtrot» should not receive funding from the state budget». The Minister promised that on September 19 at the time, when will be held the award ceremony of «Ophir», it will maintain its own broadcast to Facebook and Express their opinion without any censorship.
