The mayor of Ashdod, Yechiel Lasri made at a special meeting with a surprise announcement that caused anger within the coalition of religious parties.
Lasri, which in recent months has caused indignation of the secular population the fifth largest city of Israel, announced that supervision over the observance of the municipal law on the work shops on Saturdays will only take place in areas of dense residence of the religious population and near synagogues.
Cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues will operate on Saturdays as usual.
The mayor blamed the escalation of the conflict court, which banned the selective closure of the infringing business, led to the collapse of the established status quo between religious and secular populations. According to ESRI, the recent situation was exploited by «political parties».
Note that before the mayor spoke at the meeting, the representatives of the religious parties, announced its intention to «go to the end» and to demand compliance with the law banning work on Saturdays «in full volume throughout the city».
