Monday, 4 November, Minister of transport Yisrael Katz signed an amendment to the rules of the road (paragraph 84 «the Aleph»), allowing drivers of private vehicles to take money from passengers. According to the website «kalkalist», the amendment will enter into force 30 days after publication in the official newspaper «Reshumot».
According to the decision of the Ministry of transport, the driver of the private car will be able twice a day to take up to four passengers. The driver will not «pick up» random passengers and each trip must be approved in advance.
The Ministry of transport is also determined that the maximum cost of the trip is 2 shekels per kilometer. The cost of the trip is to be divided equally between all the people in the car including the driver.
It is anticipated that approval of travel and selection of travel companions drivers and passengers will use mobile application Moovit or Waze. The Uber app in Israel will be allowed to plan a «joint trip».
The Ministry of transport explained in the editorial NEWSru.co.il that the resolution does not provide for the extraction of a driver of profit. However, in this Department we hope that this step will decrease the number of cars on the roads.
The press service of the Ministry of transport recalled that a few months ago, Yisrael Katz signed a decree allowing the taxi («speyshl») to carry out joint visits. Thus, several passengers travelling in the same direction, can share the ride with other passengers.
