The municipality of Jerusalem intends to start charging a city tax with the UN agencies located in the Israeli capital, as well as with churches. According to «Israel a-Yom», mayor NIR Barkat has put in the notice to the office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of foreign Affairs and internal Affairs.
City hall hopes by imposing a tax 887 objects to 650 million shekels. Barkat said that it is time to put an end to someone who lived at the expense of the Jerusalemites.
In the publication «Israel a-Yom», it is noted that we are not talking about taxing churches, as institutions of worship are exempt from municipal tax. The mayor is interested in objects belonging to churches that do not conduct services, and some of the objects used by the churches for commercial purposes.
Previously, the municipality has refrained from doing so at the request of the government in the framework of agreements with the representative of the foreign churches. The municipality appealed to the international lawyer Professor Gavriel Halevi, who came to the conclusion that there is no reason to exempt the Church from the municipal tax.
This week, the municipality seized the Bank account of the Church of England, which owes more than NIS 7 million, the Armenian Church owed more than two million, of the Greek Church, a duty which is 570 thousand shekels, and the Catholic Church with a debt of more than 11 million shekels.
