According to the latest data, the number of victims of the earthquake in Taiwan has reached 113 people. Four more are still unaccounted for, reported 13 February, Taiwanese sources.
111 people died as a result of the collapse of 17-storey residential complex Weiguan Golden Dragon in Tainan, reports AP.
The Taiwanese authorities have detained the contractor and two architects on suspicion of negligence that caused the death of people. The businessman is suspected of failure to comply with all regulations in the construction of the building.
The police intend to check all the buildings that are built by the same company.
The earthquake of a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in the southern part of the island of Taiwan on the night of Saturday 6 February. The earthquake destroyed several houses. 400 thousand people were left without water, 121 thousand housing units were without electricity.
The epicenter was 48 km South-East from the major city of Tainan, in the southern part of the island, the center lies at a depth of 23 km.
Taiwan is in a seismically active zone of the Pacific ocean. Every year in this region occur on average three earthquakes with magnitude more than 6. In September 1999 an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 resulted in the deaths of 2.4 thousand people.
