As of Tuesday morning, February 9th, the Taiwan authorities to confirm the death of at least 40 people in the earthquake that occurred the day before. More than 100 people are still missing. About 500 citizens received wounds and injuries, by Tuesday, about 400 of them were discharged from hospitals.

The earthquake of a magnitude of 6.4 occurred in the southern part of the island of Taiwan on the night of Saturday 6 February. The earthquake destroyed several houses. 400 thousand people were left without water. 121 000 apartments and houses without electricity.
The epicenter was 48 km South-East from the major city of Tainan, in the southern part of the island, the center lies at a depth of 23 km.
Taiwan is in a seismically active zone of the Pacific ocean. Every year in this region occur on average three earthquakes with magnitude more than 6. In September 1999 an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 resulted in the deaths of 2.4 thousand people.
