On Wednesday evening, December 30, the Knesset voted in the first reading the bill providing reduction of the minimum age for a work permit from 14 to 13 years.
For the bill deputies Yifat Shasha-Biton and Roy Volkmann («Kulan») voted 43 deputies, the same number voted against it. As a result the bill was withdrawn from the agenda.
The authors of the bill was to allow teenagers to work with for 13 years, but only in the summer holidays, only on light work and only in a strictly defined list of places. The bill received the assent of the President of the Council on the protection of the rights of the child, but was attacked by opposition members who called it «an attempt to legalize child slavery».
