Thursday, may 25, the office of the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu sent to the media the text of his expressions of gratitude to the legislative Assembly of the Czech Republic.
«I want to thank the Parliament of the Czech Republic, which decided to oppose the decision by UNESCO not to recognize Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem. Once the Czechs gave us the guns, it was the beginning of the struggle. The last step represents a simple thing: the Parliament in Prague and urged its government to respect the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and proposed to end state contributions to UNESCO as long as the organization continues its political discrimination against Israel. This is the right position, it’s a decent position, it’s a brave position, which should occupy other countries» – said Netanyahu.
We will remind that on 23 may the chamber of deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic condemned the resolution of UNESCO, denying Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem. About 200 members of the Lower house urged the government to suspend payment of membership dues of the organization (Czech Republic UNESCO annually puts more than 30 million euros as membership fees). In addition, Parliament called on the Czech government to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
It is unlikely that the Czech government will heed the call of the lower house of Parliament.
