Prosecutors announced Thursday, April 10 that there was sufficient evidence to transfer the case to the court of the mayor of Ashkelon Itamar Shimoni. The indictment will be referred to the court after a hearing on the case of Shimoni.
Shimoni is suspected of sexual crimes, violation of the law on money laundering, fraud and breach of public trust.
According to the investigation, Shimoni paid about a million shekels to the women who accused him of sexual harassment.
The mayor of Ashkelon Itamar Shimoni, and three more officials of the municipality were detained on 5 January. Police suspect that the detainees had created a corruption network in which promoted the interests of building contractors and other businessmen in exchange for large sums. Itamar Shimoni is also suspected of having sexual relations with a subordinate.
