John Kerry, the head of the American foreign Ministry, called on the Russian authorities to release Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, imprisoned on trumped-up charges. The Secretary of state said that the so-called «case Savchenko» is a violation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement of crisis in Ukraine.
«I am deeply concerned about the condition and situation of the Ukrainian pilot and Verkhovna Rada MP Nadia Savchenko, who last Friday refused food and water in protest against her prolonged detention,» reads the statement Kerry posted on the website of the state Department.
«During the 20 months that passed since the capture, Savchenko has endured interrogations, solitary confinement and involuntary psychiatric examination. Her ordeal continued and conclusion demonstrate a disregard for international standards and Russia’s obligations in accordance with the Minsk agreements. The United States once again turn to Russia with a request to immediately release Savchenko and return her to Ukraine»», – summed up the head of U.S. diplomacy.
With the similar statement the night before the European Union. «Messages on a dry hunger strike Nadia Savchenko inspire extreme fear. The EU continues to call for the immediate release of the pilots», – quotes TASS the statement issued by the press service of the Supreme comissar of the Union for foreign Affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini.
«This would be consistent with the package of measures for the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the obligations contained therein for the release of all hostages and illegally detained persons related to the conflict in the East of Ukraine», – said in a statement.
«The European Union emphasizes that Russia bears the responsibility for the health, well-being and respect of human rights of all persons it detains», – stated in the document.
Earlier in the day the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that he sent a letter to the US and the EU to strengthen pressure on Russia to release Savchenko.
Nadezhda Savchenko accused of involvement in death of Russian journalists Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin who died on 17 June 2014 in the Luhansk region.
