The members of the UN security Council expressed serious concern about the conduct of a referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan.
According to the published communiqué, «the referendum is conducted in the period of fighting against the «Islamic state». The Kurds are an integral part of this campaign, and the referendum could nullify all the efforts made for the return home of 3 million refugees who fled the fighting».
The security Council also stressed its commitment to Iraq’s sovereignty over its entire territory and did not mention that the referendum is held about the creation of an independent Kurdish state.
Note that currently, the Kurdish leadership appears to be a significant pressure in order to achieve cancellation or transfer of the referendum, scheduled for September 25. In particular, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised to impose on the Iraqi Kurdistan sanctions in the event of a referendum. Among those putting pressure on Erbil – Iran, Saudi Arabia, USA, EU countries.
The only national leader who spoke in support of the decision of the Kurds to hold a referendum, became Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu.
