In several towns of Bahrain held demonstrations against the verdict of the spiritual leader of the Bahraini Shia Ayatollah Sheikh Issa Qassim. On 21 may he was sentenced to a year in prison and large monetary fines.
The center of the demonstrations was the city of Diraz in which he lived, the Evangelist. Here in clashes with police killed at least five people, about 80 Shiites were injured. Police detained more than 250 protesters.
Relatives of the victims accuse the authorities that their loved ones were buried in unmarked graves. The demonstrators also expressed concern for the fate of Sheikh Issa. According to some reports, he was going to send to Turkey, but for sure it is not known.
Bahrain — a key U.S. ally in the region. Most of its population is Shiite, but the ruling elite is Sunni. Unrest began in the country in 2011, have been suppressed only through military intervention by Saudi Arabia.
