Kurt Volker, the newly appointed US special envoy in Ukraine, says that Washington is actively discussing the possibility of supplying lethal weapons to government forces fighting Pro-Russian rebels in the East of the country.
He also said in an interview with the news service of the BBC: the White house believes that this step will change Moscow’s position and finds it provocative.
«Defensive weapons that would enable Ukraine to defend itself, and, for example, to neutralize the tanks, will help stop Russia, and threatening this country,» – leads edition of the words of the American diplomat, previously represented the interests of the US in NATO.
Walker believes that to achieve peace in the East of Ukraine should develop and implement a «new strategic dialogue» with Russia. The current situation he calls a «hot war» and believes that it is necessary to change urgently.
The Kremlin, for its part, warned that any action that increases the degree of confrontation, will add fuel to the smoldering conflict. Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with the BBC: «We have repeatedly said that any actions that provoke tensions, exacerbate a situation that is already difficult, only alienates us from the resolution of this internal Ukrainian conflict.»
According to statistics of the UN, from April 2014, in the East of Ukraine has killed more than 10,000 people. The Minsk agreement, signed in February 2015, the parties do not perform.
