Thousands of hungry pelicans ruin farms in Israel

Wednesday, September 27, the Society for the protection of nature and the Unification of fisheries asked the Ministry of agriculture with request to disburse the money for feeding migratory pelicans. According to «Maariv», we are talking about 300 thousand shekels.

50 thousand pelicans ended the «summer vacation» in Europe, and they return to winter quarters, making a stop in Israel. Thousands of hungry birds «feasting» on the artificial waters in the North of Israel, ruining fisheries.

In the framework of the project on the conservation of populations of pelicans and reduced damage to fish farms, which was supported by the Ministry of agriculture was planned in the valleys of the Hula and höfer arrange for pelicans «trough». This would distract the birds from ponds in which fish are grown, as well as to minimize possible damage to the birds by farmers when they try to expel them from their land by shooting.

Deputy Director of society for protection of nature of NIR Papai, in writing, warned the Ministry of agriculture that without the promised money, the project was under threat. He also warned that between farmers and pelicans a serious conflict is brewing.

Recall that in 2016, the government of Israel included in a book of plans for the year, the task set by the Ministry of agriculture, to reduce the number arriving in Israel pelicans from 1300 to 900. In 2017 in the book of plans of the government for the year was not mentioned. But the Israeli media and websites of environmental agencies to write tens of thousands of pelicans, flying through Israel (apparently, not all of them spend the winter in our country).
