U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson said that the US would not recognize the results of the referendum held in Iraqi Kurdistan, according to Reuters.
«The United States does not recognize the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan on Monday, and I believe that he is illegitimate and one-sided. We will continue to support a United, democratic and prosperous Iraq,» — said Tillerson in a statement released by the US state Department.
«We ask all parties to refrain from threats and use of force,» — said Tillerson.
A referendum on Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence was held on Monday, 25 September, despite the pressure of world powers and threat to the neighbors. Almost 92% of the Iraqi Kurds voted for independence.
