On Tuesday, may 3, in Jerusalem of the Russian and Israeli politicians and cultural figures will gather for the first in Israel «Marszalkowska read. They are organised by the Russian Jewish Congress to ensure that the world continued to know and remember the eminent poet Samuel Marshak, translated into many languages. With «readings» will start a series of events of the RIVERS in Israel, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Russian-Israeli relations.
At a poetry evening will feature poetry Marshak in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. They will read the Governor of the Voronezh region, where the poet was born, Alexey Gordeev, the President of the Russian Jewish Congress Yuri Kanner, poet Igor Guberman, theater Director Joseph Raihelgauz, Minister of immigrant absorption of Israel ze’ev Elkin, former head of the Israeli foreign Ministry, the head of the party «Israel Our home» Avigdor Lieberman, international grandmaster Boris Gelfand, a member of the Knesset Ksenia Svetlova, Brigadier General of police in resignation, Aaron tal, chief editor of «the Jerusalem magazine» poet Igor Bialskie, jazz pianist Leonid Ptashka, as well as grandchildren of Samuel Marshak and many personalities of culture, literature, public significant figures of Russian Israel. The host of the evening – the showman, the Israeli broadcaster and member of the legendary team of KVN «Odessa gentlemen» Jan Levinson.
The first «Marszalkowska readings» were conducted by the Russian Jewish Congress in Moscow in June last year. Then the famous representatives of the Russian intelligentsia read poems, attracting the attention of the public to the work of the poet, and RIVERS was collecting donations for the construction of the world’s first monument to Marshak. The monument was unveiled in his hometown of Voronezh in October last year.
This year’s event will be held at the Jerusalem center for visual arts «Beit from a-Musar» («the Israeli house of quality») is one of the favorite places for meetings of the creative intelligentsia of the Jewish capital, with a view of the Old town, at the beginning of the road to Bethlehem.
Jerusalem was chosen for «readings» is not accidental. It is a special place for Samuil Marshak: he lived in this city, wrote about him. The evening will include archive photos of the poet, including his visit to Palestine in 1911, as well as rare editions of his books.
The Creator of «Mr. Twister» and «Scattered» began to be printed as a Jewish author. In 1907 he published his first collection «Cyanide», which was devoted to Jewish themes. One of the poems was written on the death of Theodor Herzl. Then he translated from Hebrew and Yiddish a number of works of Chaim Nachman Bialik. Russian-Jewish literature applies one of the last works of Marshak – autobiographical novel «In early life», written in 1960.
