The world heritage Committee of UNESCO on Tuesday, July 4, voted for another resolution denying Israeli sovereignty over the Old city of Jerusalem and condemning the excavations in the historic part of the Israeli capital.
In order to guarantee the adoption of this resolution the Arab countries and Palestinian politicians agreed to soften the wording. However, they failed to ensure that it was adopted unanimously.
Against the resolution voted in all three countries. In this diplomatic battle, Israel was supported by three countries: Burkina Faso, Jamaica, Philippines.
Abstaining: Angola, Croatia, Finland, Peru, Poland, Portugal, South Korea, Tanzania.
The resolution was supported by ten countries. Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Lebanon, Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Turkey, Vietnam, Cuba and Zimbabwe took the side of the Palestinians.
However, commenting on the results of the UNESCO vote, commentators have noted that Israeli diplomats managed to win a small victory. According to the website Ynet, two hours before the vote, the Arab countries were convinced that the proposed resolution would be adopted unanimously, but Israeli diplomats managed to change the situation.
