US Ambassador to the UN proclamation of Palestinian Hebron object offends history

On Friday, July 7, the UN Agency for education, science and culture (UNESCO) on Friday, July 7, at the 41st summit of the organization in Krakow declared the Old city of Hebron (al-Khalil) and the Cave of the Patriarchs (Haram al-Ibrahimi) of the Palestinian cultural heritage site of worldwide importance.

Several hours later, after the adoption of this resolution, Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, called the UNESCO decision «tragic» and «insulting», reports the Times of Israel.

«The UNESCO vote on the issue of Hebron is an insult to history,» said Haley, noting that the resolution undermines the trust necessary for successful settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Haley also stressed that the decision «again discreditied the already dubious UN Agency».

Meanwhile, the official Ramallah and Hamas unanimously upheld the decision of UNESCO, calling it a «diplomatic success».

Recall that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that after the UNESCO declared the Old city of Hebron and the Cave of the Patriarchs Palestinian cultural heritage, it will reduce the amount transferred by Israel to the UN, one million dollars and send them to support projects for the preservation of Jewish heritage in Hebron.

In particular, the money will be spent on the creation of the Museum of Jewish heritage in Kiryat Arba and Hebron.

Netanyahu said that in Hebron, burial place of the patriarchs of the Jewish people, and stressed that only where there is an Israeli presence it is possible to speak about freedom of religion for all.
