In early February, on the page in Facebook the largest spa-center of Berlin, Vabali Spa, there was an announcement, encouraging guests to wear robes outside of saunas & swimming pools», writes Deutsche Welle.
The attack on tradition – in Germany it is customary to go to sauna without swimwear and any «textile» on the body – has caused public outrage. Especially outraged Berliners that they were asked to dress as a result of the complaints of the Americans, British and Italians.
Member of the Bundestag from the Left party Gregor Gysi said that «the Berlin tradition can not be broken in favor of foreigners».
Meanwhile, reminiscent of DW, public nudity in Berlin (and throughout Germany) are not prohibited. Major spa centers with saunas and swimming pools, indicate on their websites that they are allowed to swim and bathe naked.
The city’s office of tourism, advertising brochure which is included and Vabali Spa refers to the old and long culture of nudism, not only in Berlin but throughout the country. Thus, as tells a press-the Secretary of VisitBerlin Anya Mikulla, foreign guests have a choice enough in the sauna with separate steam rooms for men and women.
