Major European cities are planning to ban entry of diesel vehicles due to high emissions.
According to the Association of the automotive industry, Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler and Opel have agreed to upgrade at its own expense the software of diesel engines in millions of new cars to avoid the threat of ban on their use in cities, says Forbes.
At the specially called «petrol summit», held in Berlin, automakers have committed to develop and install 5.3 million diesel cars is new software that will reduce harmful emissions by 25-30%, without worsening thus the main characteristics of the machines.
It is planned to upgrade to 3.8 million cars manufactured by Volkswagen (this figure includes 2.5 million already recalled vehicles), 900 thousand cars of Mercedes-Benz 300 thousand BMW and Opel. The upgrade costs are estimated at 500 million euros.
