The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, said that Sharjah, part of the United Arab Emirates will become the world book capital in 2019. The decision adopted by the special Committee.
According to a statement by UNESCO, the victory of the Emirate brought innovative and open to all creative projects oriented on wide circles of society, including immigrants from other countries.
«I welcome the selection of Sharjah world book capital, as well as the efforts taken by the city to make reading as accessible as possible – first and foremost, for those who were on the sidelines. This is the engine of dialogue and social mobility,» said Bokova.
Events will be held under the motto «Read, you’re in Sharjah». They will have six major themes: solidarity, reading, heritage, accessibility, publications, children. There is also a separate program for young poets.
Also, a conference on freedom of expression, symposia according to the features of books printed in Braille, and in creative writing.
